Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State, has dismissed five members of staff, including two professors, over cases of gross misconduct.
The decision was taken during the 122nd meeting of the university’s eighth Governing Council held on Friday.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Harrison Madubueze, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
He said those affected include two professors, two senior lecturers and a principal assistant registrar.
Among those dismissed are Prof. C.C. Nwabachili, the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Prof. Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Also dismissed were Dr I.H. Iheukwumere and Mr Emeka Nwabunnia of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus.
The university said their dismissal followed allegations involving sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion and other forms of unethical conduct.
The fifth staff member is Mrs Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar who served as Examination Officer for the Faculty of Law in the Exams Unit at the Igbariam Campus during the period linked to the offence.
According to the university, the Governing Council maintained its commitment to discipline and integrity within the institution. It stated that any action capable of damaging the university’s reputation would attract strict sanctions.
The institution also reaffirmed its resolve to provide a safe and accountable academic environment while pursuing its long-term vision for growth and development.
