Former Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a national emergency on security, warning that the country's security situation is nearing a state of war.
Makarfi made the call while speaking with journalists at his residence in Kaduna over the weekend.
He expressed concern over the increasing cases of killings, kidnappings and terrorist attacks reported in different parts of the country.
According to the former governor, insecurity has reached a level that requires urgent and collective action from all stakeholders.
He said the challenge should be treated as a national issue that affects every Nigerian rather than a matter for political debate.
Makarfi noted that the continued violence is having a serious impact on governance, economic activities and the welfare of citizens.
He said many communities are living in fear, while development efforts are being disrupted by persistent attacks and criminal activities.
The former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party also urged the Federal Government to avoid treating insecurity as a political matter.
He called for stronger and more decisive measures to address the crisis, stressing that safeguarding lives and property should remain the nation's top priority.
He maintained that Nigeria's security challenges require a united response and renewed commitment from government authorities, security agencies and citizens to restore peace and stability across the country.
