DSS Releases Man Cleared Of Terror Allegation, Pays N3m.

The Department of State Services has released a man who was earlier detained over alleged links to Boko Haram after an internal review cleared him of any wrongdoing. The agency also paid him N3 million as compensation and promised further support to help him restart his livelihood.

The decision followed a fresh look into the case ordered by the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi, after officials found no evidence connecting the suspect to terrorist activity.

The man, Nura Idris, a farmer and herder from Soba Local Government Area in Kaduna State, had been arrested in June 2024 by another security agency in Suleja, Niger State before being moved into DSS custody.

Security sources said the review team carefully re-examined all materials linked to the case and concluded that the allegations against him could not be supported. Following that outcome, he was released and given financial compensation to assist his return to normal life.

Idris also received assurances of additional help to rebuild his livestock business as part of efforts by the agency to support people found innocent after detention. His family expressed gratitude, saying the payment would help them recover and rebuild after the long period of uncertainty.

Officials within the Department of State Services said the agency has been carrying out internal checks on old and prolonged detention cases to ensure that no one is kept in custody without valid grounds.

They explained that individuals cleared after such reviews are usually given medical and psychological support, along with assistance to restart their means of livelihood.

The release of Idris is part of a wider pattern of similar reviews in recent times. Other cases include individuals previously linked to different security allegations who were later cleared and compensated, with some receiving support to rebuild businesses.

One earlier case involved a man released after being held over alleged links to a banned group, who also received compensation and assistance to restart his life after clearance. Another involved several detainees who were freed and given financial support after investigations showed no connection to terrorism.

Security officials say the review process is aimed at correcting past detention errors and helping affected persons reintegrate into society.
