The Edo State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the abduction of a woman at the Vegetable Market in Benin City, an incident that occurred on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
According to reports, the victim was abducted by armed men while she was at the market with her husband and children. The incident, which was captured on video, sparked widespread concern before the woman was eventually rescued 48 hours later.
In a statement issued on June 23, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the arrests and said operatives also recovered weapons, cash, and a vehicle allegedly used in the operation.
The command explained that officers of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), acting on credible intelligence and under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, launched a coordinated operation that led to the arrest of one suspect identified as Marvelous Isaac.
Police said Isaac was apprehended during a gun duel, while another suspect, identified only as Precious, was killed during the operation.
Further investigations reportedly led to the arrest of three additional members of the suspected kidnapping syndicate, including a female suspect, Gift Raphael, as well as Wisdom Michael and Rufus Michael. The arrests were carried out in Benin City and parts of neighbouring Delta State.
Items recovered from the suspects include a Lexus RX 350 SUV allegedly used in the kidnapping, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, ₦2,050,000 in cash, and a motorcycle.
Police said all suspects have confessed to their involvement in the Vegetable Market kidnapping and other related criminal activities within the state.
The Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for what he described as their professionalism and dedication, assuring residents that efforts would continue to dismantle criminal networks across the state.
He also urged members of the public to support security agencies with timely and credible information while remaining vigilant.
