Enugu Government Debunks Viral Attack Alert On UNN, Assures Students Of Safety.

The Enugu State Government has dismissed as false a viral social media post alleging an imminent attack on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), describing it as a deliberate attempt by criminal elements to create fear and undermine public confidence in the state's security efforts.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, said the alarm was baseless and orchestrated by individuals seeking to spread panic within the university community and across the state.

According to the government, the perpetrators are the same group of criminal elements that had previously circulated similar false security alerts targeting various locations in Enugu State, including Holy Ghost, Obollo Afor, Opi, Nsukka, Gariki, and Awgu.

"The attention of the Enugu State Government has been drawn to a viral post warning of a possible imminent attack on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, by individuals it described as terrorists and jihadists," the statement read.

"The government wishes to state unequivocally that this is a false alarm orchestrated by some dislodged criminal elements and their enablers to spread fear among the populace and undermine the government's efforts to protect lives and property."

The government recalled that similar false alarms had been circulated in the past, often accompanied by recycled videos falsely presented as recent incidents. Authorities, it noted, successfully tracked down and prosecuted some of those responsible.

Dr. Agbo disclosed that the state government is already working with security agencies to identify and apprehend those behind the latest misinformation campaign.

He reiterated that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah remains committed to the security of lives and property, stressing that significant investments have been made in modern security infrastructure and technology to strengthen safety across the state.

"Security of lives and property remains a top priority of the Governor Peter Mbah Administration. This commitment is reflected in the government's huge investments in cutting-edge security infrastructure, which have significantly enhanced the effectiveness and efficiency of security operations across the state," the statement added.

The government urged members of the UNN community, residents of Nsukka, and the general public to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear, assuring them that adequate measures are in place to maintain peace and security throughout the state.

Authorities also reaffirmed their determination to sustain ongoing efforts aimed at safeguarding residents and preventing the spread of misinformation capable of causing unnecessary panic.
