Ex-Footballer Accused Of Killing Mother As Family Expresses Shock.

A former regional footballer, Jorge “Garda” Sánchez, 56, has been arrested on suspicion of killing his 86-year-old mother after she was found dead at her home in Quequén, Argentina.

Delia Mercedes Romero de Sánchez was discovered lifeless on Friday afternoon, June 19, with at least one serious head injury. Authorities have said the exact cause of death will be confirmed following a post-mortem examination.

Investigators believe the incident may have occurred around 3pm on the same day, based on early findings.

When police arrived at the residence, they reportedly found Sánchez in a visibly intoxicated state after allegedly ingesting pills. He was taken to hospital for treatment, where blood samples were collected for toxicology testing. After being discharged, he was formally charged with aggravated homicide.

Sánchez has so far refused to provide a statement to investigators and remains in custody as the case continues.

Authorities are also examining his physical and mental condition at the time of the alleged incident.

Jorge Sánchez previously played regional football in Argentina during the 1990s, representing clubs including Estación Quequén and Villa Mitre de Bahía Blanca.

His brother, fellow regional footballer Luis “Paco” Sánchez, paid tribute to their mother in an emotional message shared online.

“This is an unimaginably difficult moment in life,” he wrote. “I will remember my mum for who she was – the best mother I could have had. Together with old Paco, they were incredible parents. I love you, mum… you will always live in my heart."
