Fresh controversy has emerged in Benue State following the death of 17-year-old Sesugh Atser after an encounter involving operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi.
The teenager’s family has called for justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, insisting that he was neither involved in fraud nor any criminal activity.
His mother, Jennifer Asar, a petty trader and single mother of five, said the incident has left her devastated.
According to her, she has not been allowed to see her son’s body since learning of his death.
She described Sesugh as a hardworking and intelligent young man who faced challenges in continuing his education due to financial difficulties.
She explained that despite the obstacles, he had recently secured an opportunity to return to school and was looking forward to resuming his studies.
Jennifer alleged that her son had previously been arrested by EFCC operatives and later released.
However, she claimed he was instructed to pay ₦100,000 before his mobile phone could be returned.
She said she was later informed that he had been shot dead, maintaining that he was not involved in internet fraud or cult-related activities.
A relative of the deceased, Philip Udo, said the family was informed by EFCC officials that Sesugh and two other suspects had escaped from custody during a rainstorm.
According to the explanation given to the family, the trio was later tracked to a hideout in Makurdi, where a confrontation reportedly broke out after the suspects allegedly opened fire on operatives.
However, Udo said some residents in the area disputed reports that there was any gun battle at the location where the teenager lost his life.
Adding to the growing concerns, the proprietor of a school that had offered Sesugh admission described him as a committed and determined student who was eager to continue his education.
The school owner revealed that the teenager’s mother had arranged to pay his school fees in installments because of her financial situation.
