The Federal Government has unveiled plans to extend the Lagos Red Line rail service to both the domestic and international terminals of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, a move aimed at improving connectivity and strengthening Lagos’ position as a leading aviation and logistics hub in Africa.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the plan on Monday during the opening ceremony of Invest Lagos 3.0, an investment-focused event organised by the Lagos State Government.
According to the minister, the proposed rail extension will link the existing Red Line terminal at Ikeja Bus Stop to key aviation facilities, including the General Aviation Terminal (GAT), Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2), and the international wing of the airport.
Keyamo explained that the project is being developed in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and will significantly improve access to Nigeria’s busiest airport while easing transportation challenges for travellers and airport users.
“We are also planning to extend the rail line that ends at Ikeja Bus Stop. We are working with the Lagos State government to extend that rail line all the way to the local terminal, through the Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), and all the way to the international airport,” the minister said.
He added that work on the rail extension is expected to commence soon, describing the initiative as a major step in advancing Lagos’ aviation infrastructure and supporting future growth in the sector.
“With this development, Lagos is ready for the next big step in terms of its aviation activities,” he stated.
Beyond the rail project, Keyamo called on both local and international investors to explore opportunities within Nigeria’s aviation industry. He noted that the Federal Government has already committed approximately $500 million to the reconstruction and modernization of the old terminal at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, underscoring its commitment to expanding infrastructure and attracting investment.
The minister said the ongoing investments reflect the government’s determination to accelerate growth, improve passenger experience, and position Nigeria as a competitive destination for aviation-related business and logistics operations across the continent.
Industry stakeholders believe that the planned rail connection could significantly reduce travel time to and from the airport, improve mobility within Lagos, and enhance the overall efficiency of the city's transportation network.he Federal Government has unveiled plans to extend the Lagos Red Line rail service to both the domestic and international terminals of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, a move aimed at improving connectivity and strengthening Lagos’ position as a leading aviation and logistics hub in Africa.
