The Federal Government has announced plans to deploy a nationwide digital postcode system aimed at improving security operations, emergency response, public service delivery, and economic activities across Nigeria.
Speaking at the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop in Abuja, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the initiative was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the National Digital Addressing Policy.
He explained that every location in the country will be assigned a unique and verifiable digital address.
Tijani revealed that the first phase of the rollout is scheduled to begin in October, with several states expected to be covered before the end of the year.
According to him, the system will enable faster coordination, improve accountability, and ensure more accurate responses during emergencies and security operations.
He noted that beyond postal services, the platform will support public safety, logistics, e-commerce, national planning, and government service delivery.
The minister added that efforts are underway to integrate the system into public institutions as part of the government’s broader digital economy agenda.
