The Federal Government has commenced preparations to evacuate Nigerians willing to return home from South Africa following a renewed wave of anti-immigrant hostility that has displaced hundreds of foreign nationals and heightened fears of fresh xenophobic attacks.
The registration and screening process for the voluntary repatriation programme began on Thursday, with authorities projecting that more than 1,000 Nigerians may participate in the exercise.
Speaking on Friday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the final number of Nigerians seeking repatriation was still being compiled but is expected to exceed 1,000.
“Total figure not out yet. We are expecting over 1,000 persons,” Ebienfa told AFP.
