A fire outbreak on Thursday night destroyed several shops and offices along Murtala Mohammed Way in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred near a branch of First City Monument Bank and reportedly started from a salvage yard known as Takumbo Market before spreading to nearby structures.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the agency received an emergency alert at about 10:54 p.m. from one of its personnel, HFS Ibrahim Sabo, informing authorities of the fire.
Following the report, firefighters from the Service Headquarters and other metropolitan fire stations were dispatched to the area to prevent further destruction.
On arrival, emergency responders found a one-storey building and an adjoining commercial complex covering about 300 by 200 feet already engulfed by flames.
Initial findings showed that the fire started in the salvage yard, where a large quantity of goods and property was destroyed before the blaze spread to surrounding buildings.
Among the affected structures was the upper floor of the Kanawa Building, where two offices, two parlours, two toilets and a kitchen were damaged by the fire.
The incident also affected two stores on the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited.
The Fire Service said preliminary investigations pointed to an electrical spark as the cause of the outbreak.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, called on residents and business owners to pay closer attention to fire safety measures, particularly the maintenance of electrical installations.
He also advised members of the public to report fire incidents immediately to the nearest fire station to enable quick intervention and reduce the level of destruction.
No deaths or injuries were recorded in the incident as of the time the report was filed.
