Several people have been killed in renewed attacks by suspected armed militia in parts of Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, forcing residents to flee their homes.
The violence reportedly began in Didango village, where armed men ambushed youths returning from a football viewing centre. Two people were killed in the attack. The violence later spread to nearby Gaita, Loba and Lewatha communities, leading to mass displacement as residents escaped into surrounding bushes for safety.
Residents said the attackers are believed to be from a neighbouring community and have carried out repeated assaults in the area over time, destroying property and forcing many families to abandon their homes.
In another incident, farmers returning from their farms were attacked along the road, leaving several injured. More villages in the area were also targeted in separate attacks.
Security sources said an attempted attack on Gurum village near Kodai on Tuesday night was stopped after local vigilantes and residents resisted the attackers.
Community members expressed worry that the repeated violence is disrupting farming activities, which remain the main source of livelihood in the area, especially during planting and harvest seasons.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement, and the total number of casualties is still unclear.
