Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has stepped in to cover the medical expenses of veteran Nollywood actor Sonny McDon, who is currently battling prostate cancer.
The development was disclosed by J. Martins, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Entertainment and Tourism, in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter). According to him, McDon has been living with the illness for several years, and the governor has now assumed responsibility for the cost of his treatment.
“I am pleased to announce that H.E @alexottiofr has taken over the medical expenses bill for one of Abia’s legendary actor Mr Sunny Macdon who has been battling with prostate cancer for some years now,” Martins wrote. He added that the Office of the SSA on Entertainment & Tourism appreciates the governor’s “kind gesture.”
The intervention comes amid growing concerns within the Nigerian film industry over the welfare and healthcare support available to aging practitioners. In recent times, stakeholders have called for the establishment of a dedicated welfare or trust fund to support veteran actors, while others have advocated for stronger peer-support systems and regular welfare visits.
Sonny McDon is a respected figure in Nollywood with a career spanning over three decades. He has worked as an actor, producer, director, and motion picture programmer, contributing significantly to the growth of the industry.
His notable works include Amanyanabo: The Eagle, Force Empire, and Domitilla: The Reboot. Beyond filmmaking, McDon is also known for his socio-political commentary and advocacy for the preservation and promotion of African culture.
