According to reports, the MACBAN chairman had earlier attended a peace meeting convened by the Divisional Police Officer of Ohinmini with representatives of the Ayunne community in Ohinmini Local Government Area on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The meeting was reportedly aimed at addressing recent tensions in the area linked to previous violent incidents.
However, shortly after leaving the meeting, the victims were travelling through Otukpo when their vehicle was ambushed by armed men at a nearby village. Both Ardo Muhammad and Yakubu Isah were killed in the attack.
The eldest son of the deceased confirmed the killing in a telephone interview with journalists, saying his father was attacked and killed on his way back from the peace engagement.
The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, also confirmed the incident, describing it as one that has heightened tension across the affected communities.
“It is true that the state chairman of MACBAN was killed within Otukpo LGA this afternoon,” he said, adding that security agencies had been alerted.
The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the attack and stated that an investigation had been launched.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as security operatives assess the situation.
Local officials noted that parts of Otukpo and neighbouring Ohinmini LGAs have experienced repeated violent incidents in recent months, contributing to growing insecurity and fear among residents.
