A health worker was brutally killed by armed assailants in Ikobi community, Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, in an attack that has reignited fears over insecurity along the Ikobi–Ugbokpo road.
The victim, Ojoma Emie, was reportedly traveling from Ikobi to Ugbokpo, the headquarters of Apa LGA, on Monday morning when attackers ambushed him. Local sources said his assailants severed his head and fled with it, leaving his lifeless body behind.
Residents expressed growing concern over the safety of the route, which they described as a recurring flashpoint for violent attacks.
A woman identified only as Enole said:
“We are deeply worried that this particular route has become a recurring ambush point. Our people can no longer travel freely on roads within their own communities.”
Apa LGA Chairman, Adam Ochega, confirmed the attack, stating that Emie was killed while traveling to Ugbokpo.
“He was on his way from Ikobi to Ugbokpo when the attackers ambushed and beheaded him,” Ochega said.
The Vice President of the Ikobi Progressive Forum, Dr. Edoh Ofugocho, described how residents became alarmed after hearing 10 to 15 gunshots from the area. He explained that Emie was on his way to purchase medicine, and it was only later discovered that he had been killed near Ugbobi Junction.
“The manner in which he was killed is heartbreaking. After taking his life, the attackers severed his head and fled with it. This level of brutality is difficult to comprehend,” Ofugocho said.
He added that the victim was a dedicated health worker, husband, and father of three, whose death has plunged the community into mourning. He also lamented the ongoing insecurity along the Ikobi–Ugbokpo road, alleging that suspected herdsmen have made the route increasingly dangerous for travelers.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the attack or announce any arrests. The incident has sparked renewed calls from residents for urgent security interventions to protect lives and restore confidence in the affected communities.
