Hollywood Golden Age actress and Oscar nominee Ann Blyth has died at the age of 98. She passed away peacefully from natural causes on Wednesday, June 24, just two months shy of her 99th birthday, according to reporter George Pennacchio of KABC.
Born on August 16, 1927, in New York, Blyth began performing at a very young age, appearing on children’s radio programs when she was just six years old. By the age of 12, she had already made her way to Broadway, marking the early start of a career that would span more than seven decades.
She later signed a contract with Universal Studios and made her film debut in the 1944 teen musical Chip Off the Old Block. Her breakthrough came a year later in the classic film Mildred Pierce (1945), where she played Veda Pierce, the daughter of Joan Crawford’s title character. The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress when she was only 16.
Blyth went on to appear in a series of notable films throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s, including Killer McCoy (1947), Brute Force (1947), Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948), Our Very Own (1950), and The Great Caruso (1951).
Her career extended beyond film into television and theatre. She appeared in popular TV series such as Wagon Train, The Twilight Zone, Quincy, M.E., and Murder, She Wrote, and also performed on stage in productions including The King and I, The Sound of Music, and Show Boat.
Tributes shared by Pennacchio highlighted Blyth’s long and diverse career, noting that she remained active in entertainment for decades, including touring with performances of songs from the Great American Songbook alongside Bill Hayes and Donald O’Connor. He also praised her philanthropic work, describing her as someone who enjoyed gardening, knitting, and painting, often gifting her artwork to friends and family.
Blyth is survived by her five children from her marriage to the late Dr. James McNulty, along with 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame continues to honor her legacy in the entertainment industry.
