I Don't Have Any Godfather - Fubara

The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has dismissed claims that he is being sponsored by any political godfather, insisting that his political journey is driven by God alone.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television's Prime Time programme on Friday, Fubara said his ambition to govern Rivers State is based on his personal vision and conviction, not on the influence of any political figure.

He also rejected suggestions that his governorship bid is tied to the political interests of his elder brother, Siminalayi Fubara. According to him, both men have different political beliefs and approaches despite their family relationship.

Fubara said recent events in Rivers State have led to several assumptions and narratives about his candidacy, but maintained that his focus remains on pursuing his political goals and contributing to what he described as the rescue of the state.

His comments come amid continued political tension in Rivers State following the prolonged dispute between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The crisis has generated major political divisions in the state, including impeachment threats, legal battles and the emergence of rival factions within the state legislature.

Blessing Fubara officially entered the 2027 Rivers governorship race in May 2026 after obtaining the NDC's expression of interest and nomination forms.

His emergence as a governorship contender followed Governor Fubara's withdrawal from the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress.

Since announcing his ambition, political observers have linked his candidacy to the ongoing developments in Rivers politics. However, Fubara insists that he is pursuing his own political path and is not acting on behalf of any individual or political camp.
