The Kano State Government has allocated ₦1.5 billion for its upcoming mass wedding initiative, which is expected to benefit 3,000 couples across the state.
The disclosure was made on Monday, June 15, 2026, by the Commander-General of the Hisbah Board Kano State, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, while briefing journalists on preparations for the programme.According to Daurawa, the funds will cover a range of expenses, including furniture, food supplies, clothing materials, dowry payments, and other logistical costs. He also noted that each bride will receive ₦100,000 in startup capital as part of the government’s support package for the newlyweds.
“The Kano State Government is to spend N1.5bn on the entire mass wedding programme which will soon be conducted in the state,” he said.
He explained that the initiative has already attracted significant interest, with about 5,000 applicants, out of which 3,000 beneficiaries will be selected following screening processes.
As part of the preparations, the Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health, has begun mandatory medical screenings for prospective couples. The tests include checks for hepatitis, HIV, pregnancy, genotype compatibility, and other sexually transmitted infections.
Daurawa added that the screening process is intended to ensure the health and suitability of participants before final selection.
He also expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for approving and supporting the programme, noting that a date for the mass wedding ceremony will be announced by the state government.
