The Kano State Government has suspended the manager of the Thomas Regional Water Scheme following allegations that he was involved in actions that hindered efforts to solve the state's long-standing water shortage problem.
The suspension was announced on Monday by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim.
According to the commissioner, the decision will remain in effect while authorities investigate claims of sabotage and the destruction of facilities installed by the government to improve water supply across Kano.
Muhammad-Hashim explained that the government had been carrying out inspections and rehabilitation projects at water facilities in different parts of the state as part of a wider plan to restore reliable water services.
During these inspections, officials discovered that equipment at the Thomas Regional Water Scheme had been looted despite the fact that a related power project was completed only about three months ago and had not yet been officially commissioned.
The commissioner said he recently visited both the Thomas and Ghari Regional Water Schemes and found conditions that raised serious concerns.
He noted that facilities intended to provide water to residents in three local government areas had remained out of operation for several years.
During the inspection, officials reportedly found that electrical cables connected to generators and pumping machines had been removed.
The discovery suggested that key infrastructure needed for the operation of the water schemes had been vandalised, making it difficult for the facilities to function as intended.
Muhammad-Hashim also revealed that security personnel assigned to guard the premises were found engaging in farming activities within the facility grounds instead of carrying out their protective duties.
The situation, he said, pointed to poor supervision and possible negligence at the site.
Following the findings, the commissioner directed that the manager of the Thomas Regional Water Scheme be removed from his position with immediate effect while investigations continue.
He added that anyone found responsible for criminal activities connected to the destruction or theft of public property would face legal consequences.
The Kano State Government maintained that it remains committed to restoring water infrastructure across the state.
Ongoing rehabilitation work is currently taking place at the Chalawa and Tamburawa water facilities as part of efforts to improve access to clean water for residents.
Authorities also appealed to members of the public to help safeguard government property, stressing that public facilities are meant to serve communities and should be protected from vandalism and theft.
The government said it would continue working to revive all regional water schemes in Kano and ensure that the facilities are returned to full operation for the benefit of residents.
