Lagos Police Arrest Four Over Alleged ₦2.5 Million Newborn Baby Sale.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four individuals, including a medical doctor, a traditional birth attendant, and the parents of a newborn baby, over an alleged case of child trafficking involving the reported sale of a baby for ₦2.5 million.

According to police sources, the 28-year-old mother and her boyfriend allegedly agreed before the birth of the child that they did not intend to keep the baby. They reportedly began seeking individuals who could facilitate the sale of the newborn, eventually connecting with a prospective buyer through intermediaries in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The pregnancy was initially managed by a traditional birth attendant, but complications during labour led to the mother being transferred to a private hospital in Ikorodu, where a doctor performed a Caesarean section that successfully delivered both mother and child.

Investigations by the police suggest that arrangements for the alleged transaction were concluded shortly after delivery within the hospital premises, after which the baby was reportedly handed over to an unidentified buyer for ₦2.5 million. The buyer is currently at large.

Following the incident, Lagos State Commissioner of Police ordered the transfer of the case from the Area E Command in Festac to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The case is being handled by the Anti-Human Trafficking and Gender Unit under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

A police source said efforts to track the buyer have so far been unsuccessful due to false contact details allegedly provided during the transaction. The source added that both the phone number and address supplied were untraceable.

Further revelations from investigators indicated that the baby’s mother initially received ₦700,000, instead of the agreed ₦2.5 million, which reportedly led to dissatisfaction and raised further questions about the deal. The matter was later brought to authorities’ attention after complaints over the unpaid balance, with non-governmental organisations reportedly playing a role in alerting the police.

The mother, the father, the doctor, and the traditional birth attendant remain in custody and are expected to face charges upon the conclusion of investigations. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to locate the missing buyer and recover the newborn.
