Former Manchester United and Wales star Mark Hughes has announced the sudden death of his son, Alex Hughes, at the age of 38.
Alex, who was serving as Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town F.C., passed away unexpectedly, leaving family, friends, and colleagues in shock.
In a statement released by the League Managers Association on behalf of the Hughes family, the former football star and his wife, Jill, expressed their profound grief.
"Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex," the statement read.
The statement described Alex as a devoted family man, survived by his wife Jessica, their two children, Sebastian and Leonardo, as well as his siblings Curtis and Xenna.
"Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo. Alex was Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC and had many good friends and colleagues. He will be so deeply missed by us all," the family added.
Alex Hughes built a respected career in football recruitment and analysis after initially playing for the reserve teams of Stockport County F.C. and Wrexham A.F.C..
He later transitioned into football operations, joining Blackburn Rovers F.C. in 2007 as a performance analyst. His career also included roles with Manchester City F.C. and Fulham F.C., as well as work with a private football academy in Portugal and German club TSV 1860 Munich.
After spending time as a football agent, Alex returned to club football, working with AFC Fylde and Morecambe F.C. before joining Grimsby Town in July 2025.
Grimsby Town expressed deep sadness following the news, with chairman Andrew Pettit paying tribute to Alex's contributions to the club.
"Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club is shocked and saddened by the news of Alex's passing. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. He will always be remembered as a valued member of the Mariners family who contributed so much during his time with us," Pettit said.
Mark Hughes enjoyed a highly successful playing career, beginning at Manchester United F.C. before representing clubs including FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Southampton, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers.
During his career, Hughes won multiple major honours, including the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
At international level, he earned 72 caps for Wales national football team, scoring 16 goals and becoming one of the country's most celebrated footballers.
Following his retirement, Hughes moved into management, taking charge of the Welsh national team as well as clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke City, Southampton, and most recently Carlisle United.
