The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has issued a directive prohibiting personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from engaging in unauthorised activities on social media.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, on Monday, the IGP warned that such conduct could damage the Force’s integrity, professionalism, and public image. The directive follows growing concerns over the increasing use of social media by officers while in uniform or in identifiable circumstances without official approval.
The IGP noted that while social media remains an important tool for communication and public engagement, its use by serving officers must strictly comply with existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
He further emphasised that personnel are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content in uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their position in the Force for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial gain.
The police leadership has instructed all Commissioners of Police, departmental heads, unit commanders, and other supervisory officers to sensitise their personnel and ensure strict compliance with the directive.
Disu also warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any violations committed by officers under their command if they fail to take corrective action.
