The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, has rescued Amina Abubakar, the wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.), who was abducted alongside her husband by bandits several weeks ago.
The Defence Headquarters announced the development on Monday, stating that the rescue followed intensified search-and-rescue operations carried out by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military said troops encountered the kidnappers during sustained offensive operations at Tunga Village, leading to Mrs. Abubakar’s recovery.
According to the statement, the bandits shot Mrs. Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing as security forces advanced on their position.
“The rescue operation followed intensified search-and-rescue efforts conducted by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA. During sustained offensive operations and pressure mounted on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar,” the statement read in part.
“In the course of the encounter, the bandits shot Mrs. Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing due to the overwhelming pressure from advancing troops.”
The military did not immediately provide details on Mrs. Abubakar’s medical condition but indicated that the rescue was made possible through continued pressure on criminal elements operating in the area.
Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife were kidnapped several weeks ago along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The retired senior military officer later died while in captivity under circumstances that have generated conflicting accounts.
The successful rescue of his wife marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts by security forces to combat banditry and secure the release of kidnapping victims across the country.
