Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has identified poor governance, not technical failures, as the biggest obstacle facing the country’s electricity sector.
Speaking on Tuesday during his first official engagement with heads of agencies under the Ministry of Power, Tegbe acknowledged the deep-rooted challenges affecting power generation, transmission, and distribution across the country.
According to him, while technical problems exist, they account for only a small part of the sector’s struggles, with governance issues posing the greater threat to reliable electricity supply.
“This sector faces serious challenges. Technical issues account for only a fraction of those challenges. The larger challenge is governance. No agency, no department, no unit can solve this sector’s problems alone,” Tegbe said.
The minister called for stronger collaboration among all departments and agencies under the ministry, stressing that no single institution can resolve the problems facing the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry on its own.
