The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that a new contract agreement has been reached with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, bringing an end to months of uncertainty over his future with Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team.
NSC chairman Shehu Dikko announced the development on Tuesday, June 23, during a meeting in Abuja with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Gusau and other football administrators.
Chelle’s previous two-year deal was originally set to run until the end of 2026, but negotiations over an extension had been ongoing for several months.
Under the new arrangement, the Franco-Malian coach is expected to receive improved remuneration. A key change in the revised contract also places responsibility for the payment of his technical assistants on the NFF, after reports that their salaries were previously being covered by Chelle himself.
Dikko confirmed the agreement, stating that the revised terms include improved financial conditions and additional performance benchmarks. He said the coach is expected to welcome the new structure.
Beyond his role with the senior national team, Chelle has also been assigned additional responsibility for Nigeria’s U-23 men’s team, as part of a broader long-term development plan for national football.
According to NSC officials, the expanded mandate includes preparing the U-23 side for qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, a competition Nigeria last featured in at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles in 2025, led the team to a bronze medal finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco the same year.
