The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has arrested a 21-year-old suspect, Soliu Olarewaju Mujeeb, over the alleged kidnapping and murder of a 60-year-old electrical technician, Mr. Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi, in Ilorin.
The State Commandant, Abbas Nda Mohammed, disclosed the development while briefing journalists at the NSCDC Command Headquarters in Ilorin on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
According to the Commandant, the arrest followed an intensive intelligence-led investigation launched after the victim was reported missing.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Ayoola Michael Shola, Afolabi reportedly left his residence on June 7, 2026, to inspect an electrical installation project but never returned home, prompting concern among his family members.
After repeated attempts to contact him failed, the matter was reported to the NSCDC Tracking Unit on June 11.
Authorities said the victim’s family subsequently began receiving ransom demands of ₦2 million from his mobile phone. Following negotiations, the family reportedly paid ₦120,000 based on instructions from the caller.
The command said operatives, using digital tracking and analysis of financial transactions linked to the victim’s account, were able to trace and arrest the suspect.
During interrogation, Mujeeb allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed that he had previously worked as an assistant to the deceased in electrical installation services.
According to investigators, the suspect claimed a disagreement between them led to a personal grudge.
He allegedly lured Afolabi to an uncompleted building in the Kangile area of Kunlende, Ilorin, under the pretext of inspecting a new electrical project before attacking and killing him.
The suspect also reportedly confessed to taking the victim’s mobile phone and SIM card, which he allegedly used to contact the family and demand ransom after the killing.
As part of the investigation, Mujeeb reportedly led NSCDC operatives to the crime scene, where officers discovered a shallow grave believed to contain the victim’s remains.
The victim’s mobile phone and SIM card were also recovered from the suspect’s possession, according to the command.
The NSCDC stated that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be handed over to the appropriate security agency for further action upon completion of preliminary inquiries.
Commandant Abbas Nda Mohammed reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Kwara State, assuring residents that the NSCDC would continue collaborating with other security agencies to combat crime and bring perpetrators to justice.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in their operations.
