The Ondo State Police Command has arrested and arraigned a woman identified as Mary Olatunde for allegedly assaulting and seriously injuring her husband during a domestic dispute in Akure, the state capital.
The Command's spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday, stating that the suspect allegedly attacked her husband, Julius Olatunde, with a cutlass during a violent altercation at their residence.
According to the police, the incident was reported to the Gender-Based Offences (GBV) Unit of the Command Headquarters in Akure on June 3, 2026, following complaints from concerned neighbours.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the altercation occurred on June 2 at about 2:30 p.m. during a disagreement between the couple. During the confrontation, Mary allegedly assaulted her husband and inflicted a deep cut on his left hand with a cutlass, resulting in severe injuries.
The victim was immediately taken for medical treatment, where his injuries were assessed and documented as part of the investigation.
Police detectives subsequently launched a full-scale investigation, obtaining statements from both parties and gathering evidence related to the incident.
Following the conclusion of the investigation and the establishment of what authorities described as a prima facie case, the suspect was arrested and arraigned before a competent court for prosecution.
Speaking on the matter, the Ondo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to addressing all forms of domestic violence, regardless of the gender of those involved.
"The Ondo State Police Command views all forms of domestic violence as a serious threat to the safety, dignity and well-being of individuals and remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable regardless of gender, status or relationship with the victim," the statement said.
The Command also urged members of the public to promptly report incidents of domestic violence, abuse, and other gender-related offences to the nearest police station or the Gender-Based Offences Unit for immediate intervention.
The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, reassured residents of the state's commitment to justice, pledging that all reported cases would be professionally investigated and diligently prosecuted in accordance with the law.
