Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year, Hijira 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, and obtained in Osogbo on Tuesday.
The government said the holiday is to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year and allow Muslim faithful and residents of the state to observe the occasion.
It added that the celebration is expected to promote peace, unity and harmony among residents of the state.
The statement conveyed greetings from the state government to Muslim communities, wishing them a peaceful and prosperous new year.
Residents were also advised to avoid actions that could cause conflict and to take part in activities that encourage togetherness and mutual respect during the celebration.
The Islamic calendar year 1448AH begins on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon, and is expected to run until about June 5, 2027 in the Gregorian calendar.
