The Oyo State House of Assembly has cancelled its planned activities to mark its third anniversary, following security concerns in parts of the state, especially the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso areas.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the legislature instead reviewed its achievements over the last three years of the 10th Assembly, which was inaugurated on June 14, 2023.
The Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, announced the decision during plenary on Thursday.
He said the cancellation was due to rising security challenges in some parts of the state and the need to stand with affected communities.
He noted that the Assembly originally planned celebrations and public events but members agreed to shift focus to governance duties, lawmaking, and efforts aimed at improving security in the state.
According to him, the Assembly has passed 36 bills covering different sectors of development and governance.
He also said 276 resolutions were passed and sent to the executive arm and relevant agencies for action.
He added that committees of the House are monitoring the implementation of these resolutions through oversight functions to ensure compliance.
Ogundoyin also stated that the Post Legislative Scrutiny Unit carried out assessments of key laws, including the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law of 2019 and the Oyo State Security Agency Law of 2020.
He further explained that the Assembly organised a security summit to address recurring security issues affecting parts of the state.
He said nine public hearings were conducted on various bills, allowing stakeholders, civil society groups, and residents to contribute to lawmaking.
The Speaker restated the commitment of the Assembly to effective representation, accountability, and supporting policies that promote peace, security, and development in Oyo State.
