The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
According to the government, the decision was taken in recognition of the importance of the Hijrah celebration to Muslims across the state.
The Islamic New Year commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as a major turning point in Islamic history.
The state government said the work-free day is intended to allow Muslim faithful and other residents to observe the occasion and reflect on its lessons.
Residents were encouraged to use the day to pray for peace, unity and progress in Oyo State and Nigeria.
The government also urged citizens to embrace the values associated with the Hijrah, including faith, sacrifice, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence.
The administration further called on people across the state to take advantage of the celebration to seek the continued well-being of the state and the nation while promoting harmony among different religious and ethnic groups.
The declaration makes Oyo one of the states observing the new Islamic calendar year with a public holiday.
