Peter Obi Praises Davido For Using FIFA Stage To Spotlight Nigeria’s Security Crisis.

Labour Party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended Afrobeat star Davido for using his international platform to draw attention to Nigeria’s worsening security situation during the FIFA World Cup countdown concert.

Davido recently made headlines after appearing at the global event in a custom-made black leather jacket bearing the inscription “BRING THEM HOME” and featuring the names of victims abducted on May 15 from the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Reacting to the singer’s symbolic gesture in a statement shared on social media on Monday, June 15, Obi described it as a commendable act that brought global attention to the plight of vulnerable Nigerians and the country’s persistent security challenges.

According to the former Anambra State governor, Nigeria’s absence from the FIFA World Cup is not a reflection of a lack of talent but rather a failure of leadership to create an environment where young people can thrive.

“Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup, as I previously stated, stems not from a lack of talent but from a conspicuous deficiency in political leadership that has failed to create an enabling environment for talent development,” Obi said.

He noted that the strong presence and performances of Nigerian entertainers on the world stage, as well as the participation of players of Nigerian descent representing other countries, underscore the need for leaders to invest more in the nation’s youth.

Obi reserved special praise for Davido’s decision to use the concert to advocate for victims of insecurity, saying the singer’s message went beyond entertainment.

“Davido’s impactful gesture in drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges warrants commendation,” Obi stated. “By utilizing his international platform, Davido effectively highlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, transcending mere entertainment.”

The Labour Party chieftain pointed out that the singer’s jacket featured the names of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers reportedly abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area, calling it a powerful reminder of the human cost of insecurity.

He further argued that Nigeria’s security situation deserves international attention, particularly in light of what he described as the government’s inability to adequately address the crisis.

“The pervasive insecurity in Nigeria merits international scrutiny, particularly given the government’s apparent inability to effectively address the situation. Nevertheless, the prospect of a revitalized Nigeria remains achievable,” Obi concluded.

Davido’s advocacy has since drawn widespread attention online, with many Nigerians praising the music star for using his global influence to amplify the call for the safe return of kidnapped victims and raise awareness about the country’s security concerns.
