The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider resigning from office, alleging a failure to fulfil key campaign promises and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
Obi made the remarks in reaction to the recent announcement of the British Prime Minister’s resignation, which followed growing public dissatisfaction over economic hardship and declining living standards in the United Kingdom.
In a post titled “Owning Up to Leadership Failures and Political Responsibility,” Obi said the development in the UK underscores the importance of accountability in governance and urged Nigerian leaders to draw lessons from it.
He argued that Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges have worsened under the present administration, citing rising living costs, persistent insecurity, and ongoing infrastructure deficits. According to him, these issues reflect a failure of leadership that should not be ignored.
Obi also referenced past political events, recalling President Tinubu’s previous criticisms of former President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 election cycle, particularly over insecurity and the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction. He further noted Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promises, including improved electricity supply, stronger anti-corruption efforts, and enhanced welfare for citizens.
He claimed that many of these commitments remain unfulfilled, insisting that conditions in the country have deteriorated rather than improved.
Calling for political accountability, Obi said a voluntary resignation by a sitting leader in the face of perceived failure would help strengthen democratic responsibility and discourage a culture of impunity. He added that public office should be treated as a trust rather than an entitlement, stressing the need for consequences when leadership expectations are not met.
Obi concluded that such a step would contribute to building a more accountable political culture and a “better future” for Nigerians.
