Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized President Bola Tinubu's decision to extend the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Sowore made his position known in a post on his Facebook page, where he rejected the six-month extension granted to the Customs boss after his expected retirement.
The activist said the decision could have a negative effect on public institutions by reducing morale among workers.
According to him, such actions weaken professionalism and prevent deserving officers from advancing in their careers.
He argued that extending the tenure of officials beyond their retirement period sends the wrong message within government institutions and creates the impression that some individuals receive special treatment because of political connections.
Sowore also stated that institutions cannot function effectively when established procedures are ignored for personal or political reasons.
He maintained that due process should be respected to ensure fairness, accountability and confidence in public service.
He wrote: "I wholeheartedly reject the six-month extension granted to the Comptroller-General of Customs after he should have retired nearly two years ago. This kind of wrong-headed policy is a morale killer in public institutions. It undermines professionalism, blocks career progression, and sends the message that rules apply only to some while others enjoy political favoritism. No institution can thrive when due process is sacrificed for personal or political convenience."
