A Saudi psychiatrist has been sentenced to life in prison for driving a rented BMW into crowds at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg, killing six people and injuring hundreds in one of the country's deadliest recent attacks.
The sentence was handed down on Friday, June 26, 2026, nearly 18 months after the attack, which took place just days before Christmas in 2024.
The defendant, identified only as Taleb A. under German privacy laws, is a psychiatrist originally from Saudi Arabia. Authorities said he had a history of anti-Islamic rhetoric and expressed far-right sympathies.
Prosecutors charged him with six counts of murder and hundreds of counts of attempted murder, alleging that the attack, which lasted one minute and four seconds, had been planned over several weeks.
The victims included five women aged between 45 and 75, as well as a nine-year-old boy. Hundreds of others were injured when the vehicle sped through the crowded Christmas market.
According to prosecutors, the defendant acted out of dissatisfaction and frustration over the outcome of a civil law dispute and what they described as his lack of success in pursuing various criminal complaints.
The attack shocked Germany and reignited national debate over immigration and public security in the months leading up to the country's general election in February 2025.
