Saudi Arabia Football Federation President Yasser Al-Misehal has resigned from his position following the national team's disappointing group-stage exit from the FIFA World Cup.
The Saudis finished bottom of Group H with just two points after drawing against Uruguay and Cape Verde before suffering a defeat to Spain, ending their campaign without progressing to the knockout stage.
Announcing his decision on social media on Sunday, Al-Misehal accepted full responsibility for the team's failure to advance.
"The national team's failure to qualify for the next round of the World Cup is a result that falls short of all our ambitions," he wrote.
"I bear full responsibility for it, apologising to everyone who hoped to see our team in a better position.
"Based on my conviction that responsibility requires providing the opportunity for a new phase, I have decided not to continue until the end of the current term."
Al-Misehal served as president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation for seven years and played a key role in the country's successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Saudi Arabia entered the tournament seeking to build on its recent international progress, making its third consecutive World Cup appearance and seventh overall.
However, the team's preparations were disrupted by a late managerial change after French coach Herve Renard was replaced by Georgios Donis less than two months before the tournament began.
The Saudi Arabian Football Federation is expected to begin the process of appointing a new president as it looks to rebuild following the disappointing World Cup campaign.
