Security Forces Foil Terrorist Attack In Kogi Community.

 

The Kogi State Government has confirmed that a well-coordinated security operation successfully thwarted a terrorist attack in Ikoyi, Ijumu Local Government Area, averting what officials described as a potential major security incident.

The attempted attack occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026, when armed bandits reportedly targeted a community gathering, with intentions of abducting residents and spreading widespread panic.

According to the State Government, security operatives responded to distress calls within five minutes. A fierce gun battle ensued, disrupting the attackers’ plans and forcing them to flee into nearby forests.

Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said in a statement on Sunday that the swift intervention by the Nigerian Military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Kogi State Vigilante Service, and local hunters prevented the criminals from achieving their objectives.

“The bravery, professionalism, and synergy displayed by our security personnel ensured that the attack was successfully repelled and prevented what could have been a major security disaster,” Fanwo stated.

Intelligence reports indicate that several attackers sustained gunshot wounds before retreating. Security agencies have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects. Unfortunately, one member of the Tiv community lost his life in the crossfire, while another sustained injuries and is receiving medical care.

The Government urged residents to assist ongoing security efforts by reporting anyone with suspicious gunshot wounds or seeking treatment for firearm-related injuries.

Fanwo emphasized that the incident demonstrated the effectiveness of Kogi State’s community-based security framework. The seamless collaboration between conventional security agencies, local vigilantes, and hunters was pivotal in neutralizing the threat.

The Commissioner also highlighted the growing impact of the Kogi State Vigilante Service following its integration into the civil service under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. This reform, he said, has significantly enhanced intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities across the State. Local hunters, meanwhile, continue to play a strategic role in grassroots security operations, reinforcing the State’s first line of defense against criminal elements.

The Government commended the courage and sacrifice of all security personnel involved and reiterated its commitment to supporting security agencies in maintaining peace and stability. Citizens were urged to remain vigilant and strictly comply with security directives, especially regarding unauthorized gatherings in vulnerable areas or during high-risk hours.

The administration of Governor Ododo assured residents that it remains resolute in protecting lives and property, pledging to deploy all available resources to ensure that criminal elements find no safe haven in Kogi State.
