Authorities in Budapest have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of illegally collecting and storing human body parts, some of which were allegedly taken from abandoned cemeteries and hospital environments.
The arrest was made after detectives from Hungary’s National Bureau of Investigation received a tip-off suggesting the suspect was keeping human remains both at his home and workplace.
On June 17, 2026, investigators searched the man’s residence in Budapest, where they reportedly discovered multiple human remains. Police said items recovered included bones, skin, skulls, a complete lower leg, and a hand. Officers also stated that a human face reconstruction made from facial skin was found, along with additional bones stored in a suitcase.
Authorities further reported the discovery of a heart preserved in a jar, noting that forensic testing is underway to determine whether it is of human or animal origin.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted to collecting body parts and said he had a particular fascination with human anatomy. He also claimed to have consumed food prepared from human remains.
Police stated that the man is currently being held on suspicion of illegal use of human bodies. In an official comment, investigators described him as “passionate about anatomy and pathology” and said he had experience dissecting animals.
Detectives believe some of the remains may have been obtained through his work at hospitals, while others were allegedly sourced from disturbed graves in abandoned cemeteries in Slovakia and Hungary.
Police have also seized the suspect’s electronic devices, including computers, tablets, mobile phones, and storage cards, as part of the ongoing investigation. All recovered materials are being examined by forensic experts to establish their origin, and police say additional charges may follow as the inquiry continues.
