The Senate on Wednesday passed a constitutional amendment bill aimed at creating state police across the country, marking a major step toward restructuring the nation’s policing system.
The bill was approved after lawmakers deliberated on and adopted all 26 clauses during the Committee of the Whole session.
If fully enacted, the proposed legislation will establish a constitutional framework for state-controlled police services, allowing them to operate alongside the existing federal police structure.
According to lawmakers, the reform is intended to strengthen national security by decentralizing policing authority. It is also expected to improve intelligence gathering and enable quicker responses to security challenges at the local level.
