Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has issued a stern warning to house agents operating in the state, vowing to crack down on those who impose illegal charges on tenants beyond the legally approved commission.
The governor expressed concern over reports that some real estate agents collect additional fees from tenants even after receiving the stipulated 10 per cent agency fee based on annual rent payments.
Speaking while addressing residents, Soludo said his administration had received numerous complaints about the activities of some agents, whom he accused of exploiting tenants through unauthorized charges.
“I learnt that after tenants pay their house rent, agents still collect additional fees from them. House agents in Anambra State should get ready, we are coming for them soon,” the governor said.
Soludo stressed that the government would not tolerate practices that place unnecessary financial burdens on residents, particularly at a time when many citizens are grappling with economic challenges.
The governor's warning is expected to be welcomed by tenants across the state who have repeatedly complained about excessive charges, including inspection fees, agreement fees, caution fees, and other levies demanded by some agents during the rental process.
Although Soludo did not outline specific measures to be taken against offending agents, he indicated that the state government would soon introduce actions aimed at regulating the sector and protecting tenants from exploitation.
The development forms part of the administration's broader efforts to improve transparency, accountability, and fairness in business and housing-related transactions across Anambra State.
Residents and stakeholders have called for stricter enforcement of existing regulations governing property transactions, urging authorities to ensure compliance and sanction violators.
