Sowore Reportedly Collapses After Teargas Dispersal At Democracy Day Protest In Abuja.

"News PlatformNG" reports that human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore reportedly fell unconscious on Friday during a Democracy Day protest in Abuja after security operatives deployed teargas to disperse demonstrators.

The protest was part of a nationwide mass action organized by a coalition of civil society groups protesting worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and governance concerns across the country. The demonstration turned chaotic when security personnel moved in to disperse participants gathered in the nation's capital.

According to eyewitness accounts, police operatives fired canisters of teargas into the crowd and reportedly discharged warning shots into the air, forcing protesters to flee the area. Amid the confusion and heavy fumes, Sowore was said to have collapsed.

Fellow demonstrators quickly rushed to his aid and evacuated him from the scene in a vehicle for emergency medical attention. The circumstances surrounding his collapse and his current medical condition had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

The security operation came after the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command issued warnings against demonstrations around sensitive government facilities. Earlier in the day, security agencies had mounted barricades at strategic locations, including Unity Fountain, Eagle Square, and access routes leading to the Three Arms Zone.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident involving Sowore. Meanwhile, civil society groups and supporters continue to monitor developments as concerns grow over his wellbeing.
