"News PlatformNG" reports that the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission (PLASGEOC) has raised alarm over a disturbing trend of young girls selling their egg cells to fertility clinics in the state.
The commission claims that the practice is widespread, affecting women including tertiary institution students. Mrs. Dung, Head of the Information Unit at PLASGEOC, disclosed the issue during a Hausa programme, “Mutattauna”, on Unity FM, Jos, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
According to Mrs. Dung, the commission has identified a fertility hospital where women are reportedly selling their ova (egg cells), describing the practice as both exploitative and a form of gender-based violence.
"People who want children go to this facility and are charged higher fees. Young girls now sell their ova to buy expensive phones or fund their lifestyles. If they remove your ovum, they give you either N120,000 or N150,000,” she said.
In response, the commission has launched an awareness campaign targeting communities and schools to educate women on the dangers of the practice. Efforts include engagement with tertiary institutions such as the University of Jos, Polytechnic Barkin Ladi, College of Education Gindiri, and the University of Education Pankshin.
“We are creating awareness on the need for people to stop that. We have talked to students about the dangers and warned them to stop selling their ova. The problem is rampant not only in communities but in schools,” Mrs. Dung said.
The commission also urged parents and other stakeholders to monitor the movement and activities of their female children, highlighting poor upbringing as a key factor in the rising cases of sexual and gender-based violence across communities.
Parents were warned to take responsibility for their children, with PLASGEOC stressing that anyone found complicit in such practices would face consequences.
