President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that terror-related deaths in Nigeria have dropped by 81% since 2015, crediting ongoing military operations, increased security funding, and renewed counterterrorism strategies for the improvement.
The President made the disclosure during his Democracy Day broadcast, where he also acknowledged recent security challenges, including the abduction of children in Oyo and Borno States, describing the situation as a reminder that “democracy without security is not solid enough.”
Tinubu said his administration had declared a security emergency and expanded recruitment efforts within the country’s security forces.
According to him, more than 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military recruits have been approved as part of efforts to strengthen national security. He also revealed that the 2026 national budget allocates ₦5.41 trillion to defence and security, describing it as the largest in Nigeria’s history.
The President highlighted ongoing counterterrorism operations, including what he described as precision strikes supported by international partners such as the United States, France, and other European countries. He cited an operation in Arege, Borno State, where he said security forces “degraded ISWAP’s command centre.”
Tinubu further stated that terror-related deaths have significantly declined compared to 2015 levels, adding that over 13,000 terrorists were neutralised within the past year.
He also pointed to surrender and reintegration efforts under Operation Safe Corridor, noting that more than 124,000 fighters and their dependents have laid down arms since 2023.
