Three Suspected Phone Thieves Escape Mob Lynching As Angry Residents Burn Tricycle In Jos.

Three suspected phone thieves narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob after they were apprehended near Zololo Junction in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident, which occurred at about 12:20 p.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, also saw the tricycle allegedly used by the suspects set ablaze by enraged residents.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspects, including a woman, were caught after one of their alleged victims raised an alarm, prompting residents in the area to mobilise and intercept them.

The situation quickly escalated as angry youths descended on the suspects in an attempt to carry out jungle justice. However, members of a local vigilante group intervened, rescued the trio, and took them into custody before later handing them over to the police.

Residents at the scene expressed frustration over what they described as a recent surge in phone thefts involving criminals operating from commercial tricycles in the area.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of Zololo, Isa Bello, said the suspects had allegedly been terrorising commuters and residents for some time.

“Some persons suspected to be phone thieves were attacking people and collecting phones and money, and today they were caught. We thank God for that,” he said.

“This was not the first time they had been terrorising the area in the early mornings, afternoons and late evenings, dispossessing residents of valuables such as phones, laptops and cash.”

The prompt intervention of vigilantes prevented the suspects from being lynched, while authorities are expected to continue investigations into the allegations against them.
