President Bola Tinubu has appointed former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The appointment was announced on Monday in a statement issued by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
Ogundipe takes over from Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who stepped down from the position less than a year after his appointment. Aina was appointed in July 2025, while members of the NUC governing board were inaugurated in November 2025.
Professor Ogundipe, a renowned botanist and academic administrator, previously served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos between 2017 and 2022. He currently holds the position of Pro-Chancellor at Redeemer’s University, Ede, in Osun State.
The 66-year-old scholar earned a PhD in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from the University of Lagos. His academic expertise spans molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation.
Ogundipe is also a fellow of several prestigious professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology. Over the course of his career, he has served as President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and chaired the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council.
In his new role, he is expected to lead the NUC Governing Board in strengthening regulation and development within Nigeria’s university system, with a focus on funding, academic stability, quality assurance, and global competitiveness.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Ogundipe would help reinforce the credibility of the country’s higher education sector and support ongoing reforms aimed at improving access, quality, and integrity in Nigerian universities.
