President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of Dr. Zainab Marwa as a member of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), representing Nigeria’s North-East geopolitical zone.
The request was conveyed in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to the President, the nomination was made in line with Section 2(2) of the Niger Delta Development Commission Establishment Act. Marwa’s appointment is intended to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas, who previously represented the North-East on the commission’s board.
Tinubu explained that Namdas stepped down from his position on March 30, 2026, to pursue his governorship ambition in Adamawa State ahead of the upcoming election.
“The Senate is invited to note that the appointment of Dr. Zainab Marwa is to fill a vacuum created by the resignation of the immediate past member of the board, Honourable Namdas Abdulrazak, from the North-East zone, who resigned on the 30th day of March 2026 to contest the position of governor of Adamawa State,” the President stated in the letter.
He expressed confidence that the Senate would give favorable consideration to the nomination and confirm Marwa’s appointment to the NDDC board.
Following the announcement, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on the NDDC for further legislative consideration.
The committee is expected to conduct a screening exercise and submit its report to the Senate within one to two weeks, after which lawmakers will decide on the confirmation of the nominee.
The development marks another step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the leadership structure of the NDDC, the agency responsible for facilitating development and addressing socio-economic challenges across the Niger Delta region.
