The management of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi has confirmed the death of a 300-level Biochemistry student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, who was killed in a violent attack by suspected thieves at an off-campus residence in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
According to the university, the student sustained severe machete injuries during the attack at a private hostel housing students in the area.
The confirmation was contained in a circular issued on Thursday by the university’s Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ibrahim Magawata, and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi.
Prof. Magawata stated that the deceased, who hailed from Niger State, was attacked by a group of suspected hoodlums at his off-campus accommodation in Kalgo.
He explained that Nuhu was quickly rushed to a hospital for treatment following the assault but was later pronounced dead in the early hours of Thursday.
“It is with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah that the university management announces the death of our dear student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry,” the statement read.
“He was attacked in one of the private hostels in Kalgo by a group of thieves and sustained severe machete injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away early this morning.”
The university management confirmed that the incident has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, where an investigation has already commenced.
Authorities also stated that security patrols have been increased in Kalgo and other off-campus areas where students reside, in response to growing safety concerns.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the university community, raising renewed concerns about student safety in off-campus housing.
