UK Appoints New Envoy To Nigeria.

The United Kingdom has appointed Peter Vowles as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria, with his tenure expected to begin in September 2026.

The announcement was made on Monday by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which confirmed that Vowles will succeed former High Commissioner Richard Montgomery.

Vowles currently serves as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023.

His appointment to Nigeria comes after a diplomatic and development career spanning more than two decades across Africa and Asia.

Before his current role, he worked as Transformation Director at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office between 2022 and 2023.

He also served as the UK Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.

His previous assignments include serving as Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories at the former Department for International Development from 2018 to 2021.

He was also the department’s Country Director in Kenya between 2016 and 2018 and later headed programme delivery operations from 2013 to 2016.

Earlier in his career, Vowles worked as Deputy Country Director in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2010 to 2013.

He also held positions in India and Afghanistan, where he managed development, governance and security programmes.

Before joining the UK government in 2006, he worked as a health and development consultant with Mott MacDonald.

His earlier international experience included development and health-related roles in Bangladesh, including work with the World Bank and development agencies.

Vowles also participated in the UK National Health Service Management Training Scheme and worked with Raleigh International.

Earlier in the 1990s, he served in several development roles in Zimbabwe and spent a period teaching under the country’s Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture.

The appointment signals the continuation of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria as Vowles prepares to assume office later this year.
