The University of Lagos has confirmed that water samples taken from Moremi Hall, a female hostel at the institution, are contaminated.
The school has advised students and staff to boil water before drinking or using it for cooking while investigations continue across other hostels.
The development follows complaints from students about vomiting and diarrhoea, which led the management of the University of Lagos to begin a full review of its water supply system, including laboratory testing of samples from different halls of residence.
Preliminary results showed contamination in the water from Moremi Hall, while tests from other hostels are still ongoing.
The university said it has already taken steps to contain the situation and prevent further health risks within the campus community.
Authorities linked the concern partly to the school’s location on wetland terrain and the heavy rainfall period, which may affect water quality and borehole systems.
Students have been advised to use water only for cleaning purposes and ensure that any water meant for drinking or cooking is properly boiled until further notice.
The school also directed anyone experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, or related illness to report immediately to the University Medical Centre for examination and treatment. Medical staff have been attending to affected students while monitoring continues.
The university appealed for calm and urged members of the community to rely only on official updates, warning against the spread of unverified information that could cause panic.
The University of Lagos Students' Union also said it has been monitoring the situation and engaging relevant authorities.
It noted that while investigations are ongoing, there is no confirmed link yet between the reported illnesses and the hostel water supply.
It also added that some affected students live off campus, and alternative water arrangements have been provided in the affected hostel block after issues were traced to a borehole system.
