Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has explained why he has not yet resumed duty in his assigned country.
He said the delay is linked to ongoing national commitments in Mexico tied to preparations for the upcoming World Cup being jointly hosted by Mexico and the United States.
He made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he reacted to claims that the Mexican authorities had turned him down.
He dismissed such claims and said they do not reflect the situation on ground.
According to him, Mexico is currently focused on arrangements connected to the global football tournament, and this has slowed down several diplomatic activities, including the reception of new foreign envoys.
He added that this situation is not affecting him alone, as other ambassador-designates from different countries are also still waiting to fully take up their postings.
He also addressed reports suggesting rejection by the Mexican government, describing them as politically driven and not based on facts.
He maintained that countries maintain proper diplomatic relations with Nigeria and will receive accredited envoys when their internal schedules allow.
Beyond the issue of his diplomatic posting, Omokri also spoke on politics ahead of the 2027 general election. He said President Bola Tinubu’s long record in politics gives him an advantage going into the contest.
He compared Tinubu’s long-standing involvement in politics with opposition figures who, according to him, have changed party platforms frequently in recent times.
Bola Tinubu has remained in focus as political discussions continue ahead of the next election cycle, with supporters pointing to his experience and stability in party politics as key strengths.
