Residents of Elugwu Akwu community in Oji River Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria, witnessed a public protest on Tuesday, June 16, as a group of local women took to the streets to voice their concerns over the growing presence of sex workers in the area.
The women, who marched through parts of the community, carried placards expressing dissatisfaction with what they described as the increasing influence of sex workers in their neighbourhood. According to the protesters, the situation has had a negative impact on family stability, alleging that some husbands and young men are becoming less attentive to their spouses and families.
During the demonstration, some of the women voiced frustration over what they see as a breakdown in marital relationships within the community, linking it to the presence of sex workers—locally referred to in their remarks during the protest.
The protest has since sparked reactions on social media, with users divided over the women’s claims. While some sympathised with concerns about family and community values, others questioned the framing of the issue and called for a more structured response to underlying social and economic factors.
As of the time of reporting, local authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the protest or the concerns raised by the demonstrators in Elugwu Akwu community, Oji River Local Government Area.
Videos circulating online show the women chanting and holding placards as they moved through the streets, drawing attention from residents and passersby.
